Clothes strewn haphazardly around the room, moving
dangerously close your roommates “side”. Shoes get tripped over instead of
staying neatly tucked under your bed. Dresser drawers no longer close due to
the amount of miscellaneous clutter occupying them. The laughably tiny closet
is now a colossal mess that turns finding an outfit a bigger battle than even
Harry Potter has faced.
Sound familiar?
As the spring semester winds down, the chaos in college lives climbs. Rooms are
no longer save havens, but another added stressor. This is where the
ever-looming task of spring cleaning comes in. Don’t avoid it like the weird
person who keeps hitting on you at a party. It only takes 4 simple spring
cleaning tips to turn your room into a place you actually want to return to
after an all-nighter in the library.
1. Clean out your closet.
The most daunting task. Take an hour out of the
time you spend watching Hulu and clean your closet. Now that the sunshine has
come out it’s time to get rid of those bulky sweaters taking up space. Save the
bags from your next inevitable Wal-Mart trip and empty your winter clothing into
them. When you go home this weekend for Easter or Passover (and most people
are) bring those bags and let your parents take care of them. This will not
only clear room for those shorts you’re itching to show off, but it will also make
less to pack at the end of the year.

2. Tackle
your dresser.
Do the same thing as the closet and clear out
whatever you aren’t wearing. From my experience, though, I’ve learned that
dressers usually don’t get filled with many new things. They get continuously
less organized. Take everything out of your drawers and simply fold it. When
you moved in you put everything in them neatly. Do that again. Your dresser
will automatically be tidy and you can actually wear that free t-shirt you
forgot about.

3. Dust and sanitize.
It’s about the time to clean that sticky layer of
spilled coffee and soda off your desk. The TV now has a lovely coating of dust
that gets in the way when you’re trying to watch Tina Fey’s beautiful face on 30
Rock. That’s where these Pledge wipes come into play. They are the easiest
way to dust and sanitize at once. If you use one a week they will last you for
25 weeks (a school year is 30) and that’ll only set you back $3.88. Invest in
these.
4. Vacuum.
Getting rid of those pizza crumbs imbedded into
your rug can be a huge cleanser. At my college there is a communal vacuum in
every dorm that residents can borrow at any point. If that is not the case, I
feel certain that one person in your dorm owns a vacuum that you could borrow
if you ask nicely enough. (And if so please empty the vacuum before you
return it.)
