Campus Collegiate: Entertainment

Campus Collegiate: Entertainment

Spring is in the air.  Actually, this year, spring has been in the air since practically February, but that is beside the point.

It is finally time to put away the winter coats, sweatpants and Uggs.  It is time to bring forth the T-shirts, shorts, flip-flops and even, on occasion...the bikini.

Yes, it is that time again.  The quad is more often than not full of students relaxing in the sun when not in class, laying out on towels, catching some rays, getting that first tan of summer, before summer actually gets here.

Of course, with the return of spring, there is more to do than just tanning, and college students know it.   They have begun to invest in things like soccer balls, footballs, or frisbees and they toss them around--sometimes on the quad, sometimes just outside a dorm.  If someone is feeling particularly daring, they might even have a boomerang.  No, I am not making that up.

Spring is also the time of year when the University remembers that pretty soon it will be Summer, and all the students will not be there any more, and so it tries to schedule all its events at once.  The result is that there is something going on practically every night.  Dance concerts, plays, recitals, concerts, speakers, laser tag—there is never not something to do somewhere on campus.

It is time for students to begin planning day trips—if in the general D.C. area, than out nation’s capital is one such place students like to go for a day.  The cherry blossoms are in bloom, the outdoor café’s are open, the monuments are…relatively unchanged, and the shopping is good.  Outdoor amusement parks and water parks are beginning to open as well.  Students like to get group rates and spend the day on roller coasters or waterslides.

Couples begin having more dates outside.  From picnics to paintballing people are finding more and more to do with their significant other outside the confined walls of a restaurant or movie theatre.  Spring can also be the season of allergies, rain, and proposals.  Yes, Juniors and Seniors are beginning to get…twitterpated, to use a word from a popular children’s movie.  Spring engagements are not uncommon, and certain rocks or trees on campus have become almost legendary in their ability to make a man propose.

Spring draws people outside, away from their computers and televisions and toward the sunlight and fresh air.  There is always something going on, and, even if there isn’t it is very easy to make something up, even if it is just laying outside with friends reading, or listening to music, or playing cards.  Spring is back, so it’s time to apply the suntan lotion, grab that beach towel, and hit the quad.
